Constant Voltage Lighting systems are generally connected in Parallel as per diagram 1:

Constant Current Lighting systems are generally connected in Series as per diagram 2:

The most common step up for new downlights is the Constant Current set up. This is because internally with the downlight head the LED’s are connected in series as per diagram 2. The major advantage with this configuration is it provides the best lighting output per watt usage. However the disadvantage is that one faulty LED chip could potentially cause the lighting system to fail, however this situation is very rare due to the reliability of LED chips. One use includes step lighting for stairs, because due to the location of the transformer (20 metres+ from the first light), a Constant Current system is recommended as it will provide no voltage drop over this long distance. Running a Constant Voltage system will produce voltage drop such that each light after 20 metres will start reducing brightness.
